south african local produce awards!

was lucky enough to be invited to the Eat In RMB Private Bank South African Produce Awards ceremony today. i was invited because of this blog (yay! my cyberspace ramblings are not for nought). it was a super event, held in the Old Biscuit Mill (Neighbourgoods Market shed). we were served SIX courses with the presentation of the awards scattered inbetween…

go get yourself one of these! best guide to local eating!

i couldn’t help marvelling at how awesome it is that we have this kind of award ceremony in SA… herewith a blurb from the Eat In 2009 magazine (it hits shelves on the 8th – go grab a copy!!! it’s AWESOME):

The prestigious awards give the so-called little guys of the local food industry a chance to show off their prime produce. These independent producers are each doing their bit to put South Africa on the international food map with their passionate and ethical approach towards high-quality food. A small producer is only as strong as its outlet, however, which is why the awards also recognise shops and markets for the important role they play in promoting these guys.

now is that rad or what? small, local, independent, ethical producers. it doesn’t get better than that in my opinion. and kudos to RMB for supporting this kind of initiative. RMB’s marketing manager said that 70% of their clients are entrepreneurs, which i also think is rad. we need more support for people who are going out on their own and boosting our economy and creating jobs.

but back to the food! the entries were judged by a real Who’s Who of the south african foodie scene. (justine drake, peter goffe-wood, anna trapido, michelle barry). so i trust their opinion! gosh, i think i will have to do this over a few posts, as there is so much to say about all of this.

a buffalo!

a buffalo!

but for now… for our starter we got to taste the overall winner – the Best New Product, which went to Buffalo Ridge’s Mozzarello di Bufala (made in Wellington). SO utterly heavenly. the judges’ said it surpasses imported buffalo mozzarella from Italy! go local go. Wayne Rademeyer, who makes it, imported 24 water buffalo from Australia to start his business. you really have to taste this cheese.

also in the starter was Trevor Daly’s artisanal wood-fired-oven bread. he won the Small Producer: Bakery award (the bread category). yum yum yummy. no more processed bread for me thanks. he makes it at home in worcester, and sells it every saturday morning at the neighbourgoods market in woodstock. but he’s popular – so you better get there early to get some.

wow, i’ve got so much more to say, and it’s getting late. more instalments and winners to be announced soon, i promise. in the meantime, get your R39,95 ready to hit the stores on 8 september. that’s when the new Eat In 2009 magazine hits the shelves. i have a copy and i can’t wait to climb into bed now and devour it from cover to cover. it’s thicker than last year’s and has a lot of COOL looking articles, as well as the usual directory in the back (the directory lists all the best foodie spots countrywide – e.g. cheese producers, deli’s, bakeries etc). will review it tomorrow or friday. (i know R40 sounds like a lot for a magazine, but it’s more than that – it’s the ultimate local eating resource – you will refer back to it again and again! totally worth it).

  1. Magazine shopping tomorrow. That looks like a great mag.

  2. Thank you for your kind words and support.

  3. Hi Wayne – so glad you picked up my blog. It’s a pleasure (re the kind words). It’s so great to hear of someone taking a huge risk and doing well. And your risk certainly paid off! Winning the Best New Product award. And that mozzarella is simply heavenly.
I found a website address in my press pack we got at the lunch, but it didn’t seem to work. Do you have a website? I would love to post a link to it from here. Am sure others would like to read more about your cheese and maybe see some pics of your buffalo, and also find out where they can get hold of your mozzarella…

  4. I am sitting here definitely nursing a bit of a headache after the fabulous lunch by Karen Dudley and the delicious Ses’ Fikile Chenin Blanc.! (that pork terrine was just heavenly and the pork came all the way from our paddock winner Caz Griffin in Natal – Dargle Pork Products) Every year that I have been involved with the awards I am amazed at the incredible producers we have out there. Last year I thought we had exhausted the pool and we couldn’t possibly find more fantastic people to honour but here they are again!
When voting opens I get so excited in anticipation of who I will disover and what stories I will hear this time round and getting to know them all (we had over 200 nominations) over the last 4-5 months and to finally meet the winners on the day is so fantastic for me.
These awards are so important and I really do believe passionately in them – a huge thank you to New Media and RMB for supporting them and yes the mag is fab – don’t leave home without it…
We will have pics of the lunch on the website soon go check it out.

  5. Thank you so much for this award. Recognition of this kind is a major boost for all of us who value the way things used to be done before mass-production took over. I am so sorry I wasn’t able to attend the ceremony.
Every week is a challenge to get the bread the same as the previous week and often I just feel as if I am a privilaged spectator to a wonderful process of nature.
    Blessings to all.
    Trevor

  6. Gotta say I was pretty bummed not to have been invited to this soiree. So your blog has to actually contribute something to the REAL world for the writer to be fed such yummies?

Cool post and I gotta agree with you about the kudos going to RMB. And congrats to Wayne.

  7. sounds divine! proving once again that there is no excuse for us to be trudging through dull supermarket aisles when there’s so much exceptional choice out there – made from ‘real’ ingredients that are not only healthier, but taste ever so much better!

being a locavore was never this good :-)

i’m looking forward to getting my greedy paws on the new edition tomorrow!

  8. Unfortunately my head has been in the cheese vat lately and I have not finalised the web site. I shall do so and let you know when we go live.

I agree that Karen’s lunch was excellent. The Ses’fikile Shiraz Reserve also went down a treat. I too was amazed at the quality of the other winning products.

Thank you nrvs and congratulations Trevor. I missed you at the Neighbourhood Goods Market this weekend, but at least I got some bread.
