i got an email advertising the launch of a new magazine in SA in November this year. looks VERY interesting. it’s byline is ‘practical ideas for self-sufficiency and sustainable living’. you can make out some of the topics which will be covered in the first issue if you look at the picture of the cover above.
the email i got said:
Shared Earth magazine will be the leading source of information on solar, wind, biodiesel and other renewable energy options. The magazine reports on how simple and inexpensive it can be to use alternative energy sources to power, heat and light your home!
You’ll also find practical information on:
Do It Yourself
Lots of plans, tips and techniques covering a wide range of useful projects.
Green Building
In-depth information on natural building methods including log, straw bale, adobe, earth-sheltered and cob homes; solar designs; energy-efficiency and more.
Green Transportation
Information on better ways to get around, including comprehensive vehicle buyer’s guides.
Farming and Smallholding
Expert advice on raising poultry and livestock, aquaculture, farm machinery, outdoor power equipment and much more.
Nature and Environment
Inspiring articles that help readers enjoy, explore and protect the environment.
Organic Gardening
Comprehensive articles on the systems, methods, tips and benefits of growing organic fruits and vegetables including permaculture, no-till farming, composting, vermiculture, edible landscaping and so on.And much more!
this sounds awesome, right? i can’t wait. how cool that they think there is enough demand for a magazine like this in south africa at the moment. that is very heartening news to me. i like the idea of lots of ‘projects’ i can undertake and things to do… practical action. can’t they bring it out a little earlier???
so, if you are as excited as i am, get to the Shared Earth website… you can pre-order a subscription there at a discount (6 editions for R140, 12 issues for R260).

it’s so cool
i heard about a little while ago through the green grapevine, but at that stage they were still not official (and it wasn’t 100% certain they would publish) so I’ve been hoping they would go ahead – and they have, which is awesome. i’ll be lining up for my copy, that’s for sure!
as you say – it seems hard to believe that there hasn’t been one like this already… but the time is right, now, that’s for sure!
