the age of stupid

how RAD!!!!

was told today in our conference on climate change (see my post just before this one) about a new movie coming out soon called “The Age of Stupid”. it stars Pete Postlethwaite (Brassed Off, The Usual Suspects) and is essentially about people living in the not too distant future who look back at 2007 and wonder, if we knew about climate change, why the hell didn’t we do something about it?

the cool thing about this film is that it’s been entirely sponsored by the public, which gives the director complete freedom to make the film he wants to make. the movie has an awesome website,

george monbiot went to see it (for those of you who may actually not have heard of george monbiot, he wrote Heat and should be the president of the world. he is so militant about mitigating global warming. he also spends time exposing companies which engage in greenwashing – i.e. jumping on the green bandwagon and then not living up to their claims. go check out his blog.) and this is what he had to say:

Last night I watched a preview screening of Franny Armstrong’s fascinating film The Age of Stupid, which follows the lives of six people – from the boss of an Indian airline to a fisherwoman in the Niger delta – caught up in climate change. The message, never stated but constantly emerging, is that we all have our self-justifying myths. We tell ourselves a story of our lives in which we almost always appear as the heroes. These myths prevent us from engaging with climate change.

i can’t wait for it to come to SA. in fact, i think i will try email them now and ask when we can expect it here.
